Ambassador of the Lao PDR to the Republic of Singapore, H.E. Mr. Sengkeo Pouangpadith, along with staff from the Lao Embassy in Singapore, were warmly welcomed by Alvin Yapp, the founder and owner of The Intan, for a special guided tour of the Peranakan museum located on Joo Chiat Road, Singapore. The exclusive event, which took place on Visakha Bucha Day, also included Lao community in Singapore, totaling over 22 attendees.

 The visit provided an in-depth look into the vibrant and intricate world of Peranakan culture, a unique blend of Chinese and Malay influences. Alvin, a passionate collector and cultural enthusiast, personally led the tour, offering detailed explanations of his collections of over 1500 artifacts and exhibits that showcase the rich heritage of the Peranakan people. This visit was part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Laos.

"This visit has been truly enlightening. Alvin's deep knowledge and enthusiasm for Peranakan culture are contagious," said Mr Sengkeo. "It’s inspiring to see such dedication to preserving and sharing cultural heritage. The Lao community here in Singapore greatly appreciates this opportunity and looks forward to more exchange programs in the future."

In a gesture of appreciation, Mr Sengkeo presented the Laos Khan Sa-Nam-Kieng to Alvin, recognizing his efforts in promoting cultural understanding. Alvin expressed his gratitude for the recognition and the honor of hosting the Lao delegation, saying "It was an honor to share the Peranakan heritage with Ambassador Sengkeo and the Lao community. Cultural exchange is vital in fostering mutual understanding and respect between different communities. I hope to."

Alvin emphasized his commitment to promoting local heritage and interest in collaborating with Laos on museum initiatives to further promote cultural ties between Laos and Singapore. "Preserving and promoting heritage is a passion of mine," Alvin stated. "I believe that by working together with Lao Heritage Ministry or heritage enthusiasts, we can ensure that the rich cultural tapestry of Southeast Asia continues to thrive for future generations."

"The museum is a treasure trove of history and culture," said Ms Kaysone, a long-time resident of Singapore. "Alvin’s passion for Peranakan culture shines through in every exhibit and every story he shared with us.

The Intan, which means "rose-cut diamond" in Malay, is renowned for its extensive collection of Peranakan artifacts, including intricately beaded slippers, colorful porcelain, and exquisite embroidery. The museum received the Best Tour Experience in the Singapore Tourism Awards and voted Best Overall Experience in Singapore's Museum Roundtable Awards.  Being featured internationally on CNN Travel, Discovery Channel and National Geographic is and added testament to Alvin’s dedication to curating and preserving these artifacts, making The Intan a beloved cultural landmark in Singapore. “This is the museum that you must visit if you come to Singapore" said ⁠Ms Phanthaly.

The successful visit underscores the importance of cultural exchange and the role of museums in fostering greater understanding between different communities. It is through such initiatives that bridges are built, connecting people from diverse backgrounds and enriching the tapestry of shared human experience.

As the tour drew to a close, guests left The Intan with a deeper appreciation for Peranakan culture. The Ambassador's visit highlights the strong and enduring ties between Singapore and Laos, with more collaborative cultural programs anticipated in the future.  Before leaving, Mr Sengkeo and his wife Madam Sengchan invited Alvin to visit the beautiful country of Laos, which Alvin gladly accepted.
