The AICHR Workshop on the outcome of the thematic study on right to peace was organized in Vientiane, on the 7 December 2018 chaired by Mr. Phoukhong Sisoulath, Director General of Treaties and Law department, Ministry of foreign Affair, who is also the Lao Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), with about 40 participants from 10 ASEAN Member States were in attendance.

The thematic study on the right to peace is one of the high priorities of the AICHR work plan with the Lao PDR acting as the lead country in the study. The purpose of the workshop is to open a forum for representatives and national focal points of ASEAN Member States, regional researchers and civil society organizations to provide their inputs to the draft outcome report of the thematic study produced by a team of regional consultants. The participants have discussed the normative frameworks at the international, regional and national levels on peace promotion, the relationship of peace and stability to human rights and vice versa. The participants also discussed ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, article 38 on the right to peace in relation to SDG goal 16 on peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights is the overarching human rights institution in ASEAN. The AICHR created in accordance with article 14 of the ASEAN Charter has performed functions and mandates under the Terms of References adopted by the ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM) in 2009. The AICHR together with the specialized human rights bodies namely the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Right of Women and Children (ACWC), the ASEAN Committee on Migrant Workers (ACMW) has contributed to the promotion and protection of human rights in building a people-oriented, people-cantered ASEAN Community.
