The governments of Laos and Japan have exchanged diplomatic documents as part of procedures for implementing an Air Service Agreement between the two countries, at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on May 23, 2016.

The exchange of documents took place in Vientiane yesterday and was witnessed by the Director General of the Asia-Pacific and Africa Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Viroth Sundara, and Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Japan Embassy to Laos, Mr Ryotaro Suzuki.

According to a statement from the foreign ministry, the exchange of documents would move forward plans for cooperation in air transport services between Laos and Japan.

This would help to spur the development of tourism, trade and investment between Laos and Japan.

The exchange of documents follows the signing of the Air Service Agreement in Vientiane last year, which commemorated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and Japan.

That signing was a landmark for civil aviation cooperation between the two countries and paved the way for the opening of direct flights between Laos and Japan, to facilitate the transport of people and freight.
