The Asian Development Bank (ADB), through its Resident Mission in Vientiane, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs jointly organized an event to celebrate 50 years of development partnership between the Lao PDR and ADB as well as mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s membership in the multilateral institution.
The event was opened by Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Thongphane Savanphet, and Director General for ADB’s Southeast Asia Department Mr James A. Nugent.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mr Somdy Douangdy, Minister of Planning and Investment Mr Souphan Keomixay, ADB’s Executive Director Mr David F. Murchison, as well as other key government officials, private sector representatives, development partners, academia, civil society advocates, and member of the media were also in attendance.
His Excellency Thongphane SAVANPHET, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Laos’ ASEAN SOM Leader, led the Lao Delegation to attend the 19th ASEAN-India Dialogue held on 5-7 March 2017 in New Delhi, India. The Meeting was co-chaired by His Excellency Nguyen Quoc Dzung, Vice Foreign Minister and Viet Nam’s ASEAN SOM Leader, and Her Excellency Preeti Saran, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs and India’s SOM Leader.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR hosted the 14th ASEAN-Russia Senior Officials’ Meeting on 29 March 2017 at Lao Plaza Hotel in Vientiane. The Meeting was co-chaired by His Excellency Thongphane SAVANPHET, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Laos’ ASEAN SOM Leader and His Excellency Igor V. Morgulov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and SOM Leader of the Russian Federation.
The Meeting reviewed the cooperation between ASEAN and Russia over the past year, especially in following up the outcomes of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit to mark the 20th Anniversary of ASEAN-Russia Dialogue Relations held on 19-20 May 2016 in Sochi, Russia. In addition, the Meeting discussed priority areas for cooperation based on the recommendations of the ASEAN-Russia Eminent Persons Group and charted out future direction for ASEAN-Russia cooperation spanning across political-security, economic and socio-cultural areas through encouraging closer cooperation and coordination between the sectoral bodies of ASEAN and Russia to ensure the effective implementation of the ASEAN-Russia Comprehensive Plan of Action 2016-2020, aiming at elevating ASEAN-Russia Dialogue Partnership to a strategic level in the future.
At the Meeting, representatives from ASEAN and Russiaalso discussed the preparation of the upcoming ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference (PMC)+1 Session with the Russian Federation to be held in August 2017 in the Philippines, and also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest and concern.
Lao PDR has currently assumed its three-year term of Country Coordinator for ASEAN-Russia Dialogue Relations, which will continue until August 2018.
