Laos and the Republic of Korea hosted a Mekong-Republic of Korea (RoK) Cooperation Senior Officials’ Meeting in Pakse district, Champassak province last Friday.

This year is of importance for both countries, especially the Mekong-RoK cooperation to review the implementation of the 2014-2017 Mekong-RoK plan and to draft an action plan for 2017-2020 so as to enhance the existing cooperation between the Mekong sub-region and RoK, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Thonhphan Savanphet.

The meeting also concluded the implementation of 11 priority projects and discussed the drafting of an action plan (2017-2020) to prepare for the 7th Foreign Minister Meeting on Mekong-RoK Cooperation that Laos and the RoK will co-host in September in Busan, South Korea.

The Republic of Korea has granted over US$400,000 to Laos for implementation of the industry and trade sector’s database law development project of last year, aiming to prepare for connection, economic cooperation, and opening opportunities for trade.

The meeting was attended by the Director of Economic Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Director of South East Asia-Pacific of RoK Foreign Affairs and senior officials from Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The meeting has expressed thanks to the RoK for its financial support of US$2.3 million to the Mekong-RoK Cooperation Fund since 2014 and US$1 million per year for the implementation of priority projects including basic infrastructure development, information and communications technology, green development, water resource development, agriculture and rural development, and human resource development.
