Laos and its neighbor Cambodia on Jan 10 opened their first ever international border checkpoint connecting Champasack in Laos with Cambodia’s Stung Treng. The border crossing is located in Nong Nokkhiane in Champasack Province on Laos’ side and Trapeang Kriel of Stung Treng Province on Cambodia’s side. Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen presided over the inauguration ceremony. “The opening of the newly upgraded checkpoint is to facilitate people-topeople exchanges between the two countries, especially between Champasack in Laos and Stung Treng in Cambodia,” said PM Thongloun Sisoulith. “The move will help promote cross-border trade, tourism, and connectivity between the two countries,” added PM Thongloun. The inauguration of the international border checkpoint constitutes a meaningful event to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the deepening of the longstanding traditional friendship and solidarity between the people of Laos and Cambodia. The decision to upgrade the border checkpoint from a traditional checkpoint to an international one was initiated in April 2009 during the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s visit to Vientiane. Laos and Cambodia have finished 126,465 km of border survey and border demarcation. The achievement represents 87% of the set target.
