In response to an invitation from H.E. Bounnhang Vorachit, General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and President of Lao PDR, H.E. Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of Vietnam visited to Lao PDR from February 24-25^th, 2019.

In the bilateral meeting, two leaders exchanged views on the achievements for the development, cooperation over the previous year and discussed future cooperation in ways that would foster and develop the special ties between the two countries to a higher level. Furthermore, the two sides agreed to foster effective cooperation in economics, culture, education, public health, science and technology, defense and security, and prevent illegal border trade.

The Two sides agreed to further strengthen their great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation with the signing of 9 cooperation agreements related to financial cooperation, construction of Vientiane-Vung Ang railway, electricity and mines development and other relevant agreements were also signed.

During the meeting, President Bounnhang Vorachit welcomed and expressed great appreciation for the goodwill visit to Laos by President Nguyen Phu Trong, and for choosing Laos for his first foreign visit after taking office as the President of Vietnam. In addition, this visit was an important contribution to the promotion of friendship, special solidarity and the comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

Meanwhile, President Nguyen Phu Trong also expressed his thanks for being honoured with a warm welcome from high-ranking officials of the Party-State and the Lao people on his first visit to Laos after taking office as the President of Vietnam.

During the visit, President Nguyen Phu Trong and his delegation met with Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith at Prime Minister’s Office in Vientiane and met with Lao National Assembly President Mrs. Pany Yathotou. President also visited the construction site of new National Assembly building which granted by Vietnamese government that expected to be completed in 2021, after a groundbreaking ceremony took place in November 2017. Besides, President Nguyen Phu Trong visited the former Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and President of Laos, Choummaly Sayasone and attended the welcoming dinner organized by President Bounnhang Vorachit.
